Luis Suárez not in José Mourinho’s good books over Chelsea tactics

José Mourinho has dismissed claims in Luis Suárez’s autobiography that a Chelsea player was uncomfortable with his manager’s time-wasting tactics when the London club won at Anfield in April, and vowed never to write his own book just to “tell shit” and criticise.
The Portuguese takes his players to Merseyside on Saturday for the first time since the 2-0 win which effectively wrested the destiny of last season’s Premier League title out of Liverpool’s hands.
Chelsea’s selection that afternoon had been made with the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Atlético Madrid in mind three days later, and with their own pursuit of domestic honours effectively over, yet they excelled defensively and prevailed to hand the initiative in the race to the eventual winners, Manchester City.
Suárez had reflected on that missed opportunity in his autobiography and recalled a conversation on the pitch with an unnamed Chelsea player after complaining at the visitors’ perceived time-wasting tactics. “What do you want me to do?” he claimed his opponent said. “If [Mourinho] makes us play like this, I have to play like this. What else can I do? If I don’t, I won’t play. What would you do?’”
Those allegations were put to Mourinho, who had been criticised by Roy Keane while he publicised his own recent book and has regularly suggested he is being mentioned to boost sales, with the Chelsea manager shrugging. “Another book,” he said. “Books … Do you read these books? I don’t. At 51, I might have enough story to write one. But when you are 25? Do you write a book about when you were a kid? I don’t think I will [do a book]. I have an invitation to do a picture book, just with 100 photographs I’d choose of my career, and I’d just make a little comment on every picture. A memory book. But not a book to tell shit and to criticise people and to speak negative things about people who belong to my career.”
Chelsea’s successful tactical gameplan on their last visit to Anfield had provoked criticism from the Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, who claimed the visitors had “parked two buses” and that it was “not hard to coach 10 players to be on the edge of the 18-yard box”. The pair, who are friends from Rodgers’ time under Mourinho on the Chelsea staff, have since spoken and remain on good terms, though the two-times European Cup winner would still reject accusations that his team’s approach had purely been defensive.
Asked if it is indeed the case that instilling defensive discipline is simple, Mourinho said: “It’s happened before in football. It’s an option. But it’s difficult to win a game playing just to defend, not thinking about how to counterattack or exploit the weaknesses of the opponent. It’s difficult to win just by defending, but you never know. When we have the ball, our intention is to score goals. When Liverpool have the ball, we have to stop them scoring. Sometimes some people pretend to be clever or influence the opinion of others and say it’s not, but that is the ABC of football.”
The Chelsea manager expects all those players rested by Rodgers at Real Madrid on Tuesday – he rattled off their names – to start, and insisted he would not be in the market to secure Steven Gerrard at the end of the season if he does not agree new terms to remain at Liverpool.
Diego Costa will begin for the visitors despite Spain’s decision not to select him for their forthcoming international fixtures because of a pelvic problem. “I expect a game where Liverpool know that, if they lose, they are 15 points behind [Chelsea],” said Mourinho. “If they are 15 points behind in November, obviously it’s not over for them but it’s difficult. If they win, nine points behind is different to 15. It’s a very good motivation for them. So I expect them to try and win.
“As for us, we knew in the first 11 matches we would have to go to Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool, so we knew for sure we’d have the most difficult fixtures of every team. The fixtures were very, very difficult. If, after 11 matches, we had been in a mid-table position because we had lost three matches, it would have been something normal, very acceptable.
“When we leave Anfield, we will have left behind three of the most difficult stadiums to play in all season. The points we are getting against the other contenders – one here, one there, three here, three there – are important points.”
They arrive on Merseyside unbeaten, with a four-point advantage at the top and Costa in their lineup. There is relief at Chelsea that Spain have opted against calling him up for the games against Belarus and Germany, allowing the player a complete two-week rest to recover from his persistent hamstring and groin complaints.

Sergio Aguero backs Manchester City to revive European campaign

Sergio Aguero says he can understand why Manchester City have been criticised this season, but expects their form to quickly improve.
The striker has scored 12 goals for City, but they are bottom of their Champions League group and six points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.
"Of course we understand the people who have been criticising us," 26-year-old Aguero told Football Focus.
"The club invests in top players and the fans want to see more from us."
Aguero added: "But we still have time to put things right. The supporters here are more respectful and patient but they still expect a bit more from all of us. We can still turn it around, though."
The Argentina international scored the winner as City began the week by winning 1-0 in a tumultuous Manchester derby.
But on Wednesday, they were booed off the field after losing 2-1 at home to Russian side CSKA Moscow.
City's Champions League record since they first played in the competition in 2011 is played 24, won eight, drawn six, lost 10. They have not kept a clean sheet in nine home games.
Manuel Pellegrini's team could go out even if they win their next two games against Roma and Bayern Munich.
"In the Champions League, we are not currently in the position we want to be," said Aguero. "It's not what we were expecting. The only thing we can do is to keep going, we still have two games to play and we have to win both, and then wait and see how the other results go."
"In spite of how badly things have gone in the Champions League, we are still fortunate enough to be able to qualify. So it's up to us."

Louis van Gaal says he needs three years to turn Manchester United around

The United boss said he feels "lousy" about their poor start to the season – and admits he has under-achieved.
The club is four points worse off than they were at the same stage last season under David Moyes, that despite a summer spending spree of £150 million on six new players.
Van Gaal's appointment was greeted with great fanfare at Old Trafford this summer, and a near-perfect pre-season tour raised hopes of a tilt at the title.
But after 10 matches United are 10th in the Barclays Premier League having gained just 13 points - their worst start since 1986.
"It's not good enough," the United boss said.
'I feel, myself, very lousy for the fans firstly, but also for the board because they have a great belief in me and my players and my staff and when you have 13 points out of 10 matches you are not doing well."
Unlike Moyes, Van Gaal had a favourable run of fixtures at the start of the campaign.
But Van Gaal only took a point from the games against Sunderland, West Brom and Burnley.
Last week's derby defeat to City, as well as defeats Swansea, Leicester and MK Dons have also been hard to stomach for the Dutchman.
But Van Gaal, not for the first time this season, demanded patience from the supporters in his press conference the day before United host Crystal Palace.
He thinks his philosophy will make United a better team in the long run.
"Yes, that is what I am doing," said Van Gaal, who has previously enjoyed success with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax.
"That is what I have always done at all the clubs. You can listen to the boards of these clubs and what they are saying about me.
"I am training in another way than most of the other managers are doing. I train them in their brains. Every player has to know why they are doing things on the pitch."
And Van Gaal insists there will be no quick fix at United.
"We are in a process and that process shall take more than one year," he said. "It shall take three years.
"I cannot say when the results are coming. When I did it with Bayern Munich it was December 8. It can be February 1. But it doesn't matter. This is a process of three years. I have signed for three years.
"It takes a lot of time. But at the end, when they know it and they are doing the things with conscience, the results shall come.
"Our goal (this season) is to get back in the Champions League."

Benzema is unfairly criticised - Deschamps

Didier Deschamps believes Karim Benzema is unfairly criticised in France as he announced his latest squad for the upcoming friendlies against Albania and Sweden.
The striker has been in incredible form for Real Madrid this season, scoring 10 goals and picking up five assists in 12 Liga and Champions League appearances.
However, he remains behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the limelight at the Spanish club, while he has come under criticism in his homeland for failing to shine in the national team, but the coach has leapt to his defence.
"He has been efficient for many years," he told reporters. "We also have to look at his statistics and the club he plays for. He is unfairly criticised, especially in France, because abroad he is considered a very high level player.
"He can always do better but he is a very important player for his club and for us, and he enjoys being there."
Deschamps revealed his list of 23 players for the Euro 2016 hosts' friendlies, bringing Benoit Tremoulinas into the team alongside Alexandre Lacazette and Antoine Griezmann.

The full squad:
Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris (Tottenham), Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Benoit Costil (Rennes)
Defenders: Raphael Varane (Real Madrid), Lucas Digne (Paris Saint-Germain), Christophe Jallet (Lyon), Bacary Sagna (Manchester City), Eliaquim Mangala (Manchester City), Loic Perrin (Saint-Etienne), Benoit Tremoulinas (Sevilla), Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (Roma).
Midfielder: Yohan Cabaye (Paris Saint-Germain), Paul Pogba (Juventus), Mathieu Valbuena (Dynamo Moscow), Blaise Matuidi (Paris Saint-Germain), Josuha Guilavogui (Wolfsburg), Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton), Moussa Sissoko (Newcastle), Dimitri Payet (Marseille).
Forwards: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Andre-Pierre Gignac (Marseille), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon)

Sanchez wins PFA Player award

Arsenal and Chilean international forward Alexis Sanchez has been named the PFA Fan Player of the Month for October.
The award, powered by 90min (formerly known as FTBpro), comes following Sanchez's impressive performances for Arsenal during October in which he scored three goals and one assist.
Sanchez scored in Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Hull at the start of the month, and provided the assist for Danny Welbeck's stoppage time equalising goal. Sanchez followed this up with both goals the following week as Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0.
Sanchez has continued his good form into the start of the November scoring twice in Arsenal's 3-0 victory over Burnley last weekend.
Arsenal are currently fourth in the Premier League with 17 points from 10 games and travel to Swansea this weekend before a home game with Manchester United and trip to West Bromwich Albion.
The PFA Fan Player of the Month Awards are designed to give a strong voice to the supporters who are the lifeblood of the game. The awards are endorsed by the players and supported by the clubs.
One lucky fan voter will be chosen to present Alexis Sanchez with the PFA Fan Player of the Month award in person later this month.
The vote for the November PFA Fan Player of the Month is now open across 90min web and mobile sites, go to www.90min.com to cast your vote.

Banned CSKA fans thrown out of Etihad Stadium at Man City match

A group of around 80 CSKA Moscow supporters were thrown out of last night's Champions League match at Manchester City.
Fans of the Russian club were banned from the clash by Uefa following a series of offences including racist chanting.
Dozens defied the restriction but were quickly spotted by home supporters at the Etihad Stadium.
Stewards asked the group to leave and they did so. No arrests were made.
The flashpoint occurred when striker Seydou Doumbia scored his second goal to give CSKA e a 2-1 lead. As no criminal offences had been committed police left the issue to the club.
The CSKA fans complied with the request and left the stadium.
CSKA supporters had been banned for three home games (which was reduced to two after an appeal) and two away Champions League matches.
However, around 300 supporters were present at their home match against City at the Arena Khimki - something which prompted an angry response from City captain Vincent Kompany.
Tickets for Wednesday's match had gone on open sale but were not sold to anyone with Russian addresses or email addresses.
CSKA triumphed 2-1 in a bad tempered affair in which two City players were sent off and left the Manchester club bottom of the group.

Former Barcelona club president José Nuñez must serve two years in prison

The former Barcelona club president José Nuñez has lost his final appeal against a court verdict that sentenced him to two years and two months in prison after being found guilty of bribing tax inspectors.
A court in Barcelona has ruled that the 83-year-old Nuñez must enter prison “in a period of 10 days” after rejecting his appeal to remain free until the government hears his pardon request.
The court says in a statement “a request for pardon ... does not carry an automatic right to suspend the carrying out of a sentence”.
Nuñez was found guilty of having bribed tax inspectors in 2011. The original sentence of six years was later reduced.
Nuñez, who owns a construction company, was president of Barcelona from 1978 until 2000.

Arsene Wenger: Arsenal boss 'annoyed' at Anderlecht draw

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he was "annoyed" at a "very disappointing" 3-3 draw with Anderlecht.
The Gunners let a 3-0 lead slip to fall five points behind Champions League Group D leaders Borussia Dortmund with two games to play.
"We had a poor defensive performance from the first until the last minute. We never looked comfortable and we got punished," said Wenger.
"Annoyed? Yes. It is very disappointing. We were very poor."
Victory at the Emirates Stadium would have seen Arsenal qualify for the last 16 with two games to spare, but now they need a point from their final two games at home to Dortmund and away at Galatasaray.
And, with Dortmund unlikely to be caught, Wenger's men look set to be unseeded in the draw for the first knockout round, hampering their chances to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.
"For winning the group, you can say that's nearly impossible now," added Frenchman Wenger.
"In the Champions League you need to be at your best mentally and we weren't today. Maybe subconsciously we underestimated Anderlecht at 3-0."
A penalty by Mikel Arteta and goals from Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had the home side 3-0 up within the hour, but two from Anthony Vanden Borre - one a spot-kick - got the Belgians back in it before Aleksandar Mitrovic's last-minute equaliser.
"There was a bit of bad luck because their first goal was clearly offside but we never looked good enough defensively," continued Wenger.
"It was a combination of fatigue and switching off. We dropped off and were always open. We didn't stop the crosses or the long balls."
Wenger, 65, also failed to shake hands with Anderlecht counterpart Besnik Hasi at full-time.
"I didn't get a hand [from Wenger] but I don't know [why]. I was running with my players to celebrate," said Hasi.
To compound Arsenal's poor evening, midfielder Arteta suffered a hamstring injury which is likely to make him a major doubt for Sunday's Premier League match at Swansea.
"I don't know how long he will be out for," said Wenger.

Ronaldo not focused on record

Cristiano Ronaldo is not focused on surpassing Raul's UEFA Champions League scoring record, according to Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.
The Portuguese forward is currently one short of the Real legend's 71-goal marker in Europe's elite club competition, while Barcelona's Lionel Messi sits on 69.
Ronaldo failed to pull level with Raul as Real beat Liverpool 1-0 on Tuesday, but Ancelotti insisted his failure to find the net would have no negative impact.
"Cristiano always wants to score," said the Italian. "[On Tuesday] he was focused on the match as we needed the win.
"We haven't spoken about the record. I thought he was great [against Liverpool].
"He will score next time.
"I don't think Cristiano is frustrated after not scoring. I think he is happy like all of us as we got the win and he is focused on the next game."
Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the match as Real booked their place in the round of 16.

Ibrahimovic to miss PSGs Champions League match against APOEL

Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League match against APOEL on Wednesday with the nagging heel injury that has now seen him sidelined for more than 10 weeks this season.
PSG coach Laurent Blanc said the Swede was "not far away, but he's missing something".
"It's an injury that is not muscular, so he has had to work it a lot," Blanc said.
"He's lacking competition and has lost contact with the ball, but physically he's not lost much."
Blanc, with one eye on Sunday's Ligue 1 match against Marseille, added: "If that damn pain went away, he could be very competitive very quickly."
Quizzed on Ibrahimovic's call-up by Sweden for matches on November 15 and 18 against Montenegro and France, Blanc replied: "It doesn't surprise me.
"When you have a chance of getting a guy like that back, you try your arm."

Steven Gerrard set to miss Madrid clash as Brendan Rodgers keeps eye on Chelsea

The Liverpool boss wants to hold his captain back for Saturday's crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea.
But Rodgers - who is also considering leaving out Raheem Sterling and Dejan Lovren denied placing priority on the League campaign was a gamble.
Gerrard, 34, played 90 minutes in the weekend defeat to Newcastle.
And when Rodgers was asked whether he would give the midfielder the night off ahead of the Chelsea game, Rodgers admitted: "It is something I need to look at. Steven and I have spoken about that.
"Three big games: Newcastle, Madrid and then Chelsea. I need to look at a number of players to look at the games we want them to play in.
"That is something I will look at and we will see how that shapes up.
"In Steven's case, I have to look at what the priority is for him and us. If he played against Newcastle and didn't play tomorrow night you could say this Saturday was the priority.
"We brought in other players and there is responsibility to look at them.
"But there is no doubt that our priorities are the Premier League and then the Champions League.
"If we want to develop we need to ensure we are in the top four but we also want to qualify from this group.
"I see we have spent an awful lot of money on players to come in and now we have to give them an opportunity to perform.
"If, at the end of this cycle of games, they haven't performed, they can never say they haven't been given a chance."

Former pro footballer found dead in house aged 34 after battle with alcohol problem

A former professional footballer who battled problems with alcohol since retiring from the game has died at the age of 34.
Martin Garratt's life took a downward spiral after a career that included spells with York City, Mansfield Town and Lincoln City.
An inquest will be held after his dead body was found at a house in Middlesbrough, where neighbours said he had been living, reports the Teesside Gazzette.
Garratt grew up in Middlesbrough and played for York City’s youth team from 1995, turning professional in 1998.
He made his first team debut in a 3-0 defeat to Preston North End on August 8 of that year and finished the 1998-99 season with 44 appearances and one goal.
He trained with Leeds United after the end of the season but was later sacked by York owing to personal problems and was signed by Mansfield Town in 2000.
Garratt went on to play for Irish team St Patrick’s Athletic, Lincoln City, Hednesford Town and North Ferriby United.
Born in York, he later moved back to Middlesbrough where his drink problems are understood to have worsened.
He was made subject to a Antisocial Behaviour Order in 2010 banning him from numerous pubs in the town, from being drunk in a public place and behaving in a threatening or intimidating manner.
Cleveland Police said officers were called by ambulance staff to an address in Lovaine Street, just before 5.30pm on Friday, October 24.

Michael Carrick ready to solve Manchester United’s centre-back crisis

Michael Carrick is happy to solve Manchester United’s injury crisis by playing at centre-back in the coming weeks.
Carrick made his first appearance of the season on Sunday when he came off the bench to replace the injured centre-back Marcos Rojo in United’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.
United expect Rojo, who dislocated his left shoulder sliding in for a tackle, to be out for some time which is a blow to Louis van Gaal as he is already short of options at centre-half.
The United manager is set to be without Phil Jones for some time as the England centre-back is suffering from shin splints – his second injury of the season.
Jonny Evans has not played for more than six weeks because of an ankle injury while Chris Smalling is serving a one-match ban for his careless dismissal for two petty fouls on Sunday.
Carrick has played at centre-back on occasions throughout his career and he would have no problem starting there in Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace.
“If I need to play there then fine I have not had a lot of football recently so I will play anywhere,” said Carrick, who suffered a serious ankle injury just before United embarked on their pre-season tour of the United States.
“It’s not somewhere I have played an awful lot of games. I have had spells of playing there over the years, playing two or three or four games in a season. But I don’t mind. I will play anywhere.”
Rojo raised hopes of a speedy recovery on Monday when he tried to play down the extent of the injury on Twitter.
Gracias a todos por los mensajes. Gracias a dios fue solo un mal momento/ Thank you all for your messages. Thank god it was nothing,” the Argentinian wrote.
United believe Rojo, who speaks only limited English as he has only been in the country for two months, made something of a mistake in his translation of the Spanish part of his tweet.
“Solo un mal momento” translates as “only a bad moment”, rather than “nothing”, and the club believe the defender’s injury is serious.
Rojo was discharged from hospital on Sunday evening and the club have confirmed that the defender had suffered a dislocation. Medical estimates of a recovery time from such an injury range from six weeks to three months.
In 2011 Rojo’s team-mate Rafael was out for three and a half months with a dislocated shoulder. That means Van Gaal is likely to field Carrick as a centre-half alongside either Tyler Blackett or Paddy McNair this weekend.

Football transfer rumours: Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce?

Brring, brring. Brring, brring.
“Hello?”
“Hello. Is that Robin van Persie’s representatives?”
“Yes, it is. With whom are we speaking?”
“Ah, this is 19-time Super Lig champions Fenerbahce.”
“And what can we do for you Fenerbahce?”
“Well, we were just wondering: would Robin perhaps fancy January move to Istanbul? It’s pretty warm down here at that time of year. And he could play alongside Moussa Sow, Pierre Webó and Dirk Ku…”
“Can we just stop you there Fenerbahce. It doesn’t really sound like one for us I’m afraid.”
“Really? Are you sure?”
“Quite sure, thank you very much. Quite sure.”
“Ah well. If you don’t ask you don’t get. Good day Robin van Persie’s representatives.”
“Good day Fenerbahce.”
Click.
But still, according to reports in Turkey, according to the Daily Star, Fener have indeed been making enquiries about Manchester United’s misifiring Dutchman. January is a no-go, but watch this space …
Elsewhere Manchester City and Bayern Munich are set to strip to the waist, grease themselves up and go mano-a-mano over Dortmund’s Marco Reus. Again, there’ll be nothing happening in January, but both clubs are apparently willing to trigger Reus’s €25m release clause in the summertime, when the weather is hot, and you can stretch right up and touch the sky, when the weather’s fine, you got diminutive attacking schemers, you got diminutive attacking schemers on your mind.
Internazionale want Fabio Borini, but they’re unlikely to stump up the £14m required to prise him from Liverpool. They may be forced to wear a big coat while visiting Anfield, stuff him in an inside pocket when no one’s looking and then walk out casual like. One striker who won’t be at Anfield in January is Divock Origi – the man on loan at Lille is to remain on loan at Lille until the end of the season, according to manager Rene Girard.
Paul Lambert has two games to save his job – defeats at West Ham and at home to Southampton could spell T.H.E.E.N.D. for the Aston Villa manager. And in other managerial news David Moyes wants Phil Neville as his No2 if he takes over at Real Socieded.
And the gaping holes in Manchester United’s backline will be addressed not a jot when the club triggers the £24m release clause of Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez in January.

Yaya Toure: Police told of 'racist' tweets sent to Man City star

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out has informed police of "racist tweets" sent to Manchester City's Yaya Toure.
Midfielder Toure, 31, reactivated his account with the social network on Monday after a five month absence.
Kick It Out said it had "received complaints" about two tweets of a "racist nature" and told the police.
"Yaya Toure has been on Twitter for a matter of hours and he has already received abuse of an appalling nature," said a Kick It Out spokesperson.
"We are disturbed by the fact that someone can be treated this way.
"It makes footballers start to question why they should use these platforms.
"We will offer Yaya Toure our full support."
Former Barcelona player Toure, who has been African Footballer of the Year for the past three years, was also the target of racist abuse last season when City beat CSKA Moscow in Russia.
The Ivory Coast international said he was "furious" and, although CSKA denied Toure had been abused, Uefa ordered the partial closure of the Russian club's stadium for their next Champions League tie.

Schweinsteiger set to return this year

Bastian Schweinsteiger is likely to return for Bayern Munich this year, having missed the start of the campaign with a knee injury.
Following Germany's World Cup success in Brazil, Schweinsteiger picked up a minor ankle issue in Bayern's close-season preparations before irritation around the patellar tendon kept him from returning to competitive club action.
Schweinsteiger has been ruled out of the early stages of Bayern's Bundesliga defence as a result, but chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed the midfielder was set to return before the turn of the year.
Rummenigge expects the Germany captain to be back in training at Bayern during this month's international break.
"He is likely to come back in 2014," he told Kicker.
"All is okay. He may get back into the team's training in the next international break."
Bayern's final game before the mid-season break comes against Mainz at the Coface Arena on December 19.

Sergio Aguero says Manchester City must build on win over Manchester United

Sergio Aguero has stressed the importance of Manchester City keeping up the winning habit as they pursue Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Aguero's 63rd-minute goal steered City to a 1-0 victory over local rivals Manchester United on Sunday, and it leaves Manuel Pellegrini's third-placed men six points behind unbeaten leaders Chelsea, who have taken 26 points from a possible 30 this term.
The win over United came after back-to-back defeats for City, in the Premier League to West Ham and then the Capital One Cup to Newcastle.

Aguero told City TV: "It is important to win. Chelsea are doing very well and they keep winning but we have to go on and I'm sure they will drop some points.
"They play at Liverpool next weekend and we will see if they drop points but the important thing is that we have to win games."
Aguero's clinical finish from Gael Clichy's cut-back took the 26-year-old Argentina international to 10 Premier League goals for the campaign.
He is currently the division's top scorer, but Aguero's focus is on the points he can help the team gain rather than individual accolades.
"There is a long way to go," he said when asked about leading the scoring charts.
"It's important to continue like that and it is important that all the goals mean that we win games. I always say that goals are great when they mean victories."
